This switch takes effect immediately and stays in place on this browser. It is the same control whether you were asked for permission or not.
The preference lives in a cookie on this browser, so clearing your cookies or switching to another device resets it.
Why some visitors see a banner
Privacy law is not the same everywhere, so we do not treat everywhere the same.
If you are visiting from the EU, the EEA, the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Switzerland, the law says we have to ask before setting any cookie that is not strictly necessary. You get a banner, nothing is measured until you answer, and declining is one click — the same as accepting.
Everywhere else, analytics are on by default and you can switch them off above. That is what the law in those places allows, and it is why we do not show a banner to every visitor on earth: a banner shown where it is not required deletes the measurement of everyone who closes it, which leaves us with numbers that describe only the people patient enough to click.
We work out which applies from the country your connection appears to come from, at the edge of our network. We store the answer — one word — and never your country or your IP address. If we cannot tell where you are, you get the banner.
Strictly necessary cookies
These two run for everyone and cannot be switched off, because they are what make the choice above work. Neither carries anything about you personally.

We use them to see which tools founders read about and which pages send people away, so we know what to write next. We do not run advertising on this site, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not sell any of it on.
Measurement that uses no cookies
We use Fathom Analytics to count page views. It sets no cookie, stores nothing on your device, reads nothing back, and cannot follow you to another site. It produces a daily total and nothing that points at a person.
Because it stores nothing on your device, it runs for every visitor and is not covered by the switch above. It is also the reason we can afford to let you turn the rest off: a plain count of visits tells us whether the site is working, without anyone having to be followed around it.
Session recording
PostHog and Sentry can record a replay of a visit — where the cursor moved, what was clicked, which part of the page was on screen. We use it to work out what went wrong when something breaks.
Every input and every piece of text on the page is masked before the recording leaves your browser. Text is replaced with blocks at the point of capture, not later on a server, so what you typed into a form never reaches us in a replay — not your email address, not your message, not anything you pasted in.
Both only run when analytics are on for you. Sentry's additionally only records when something actually goes wrong — there is no background sample of ordinary visits — and it is subject to the same masking.
Error monitoring
Sentry tells us when the site throws an error, so we can fix it. It sets no cookie. Before an error report is sent, we remove the IP address, strip search terms and any unrecognised parameters out of the web address, and replace the contents of anything you submitted with a marker.
We keep error monitoring outside the switch above because a site that cannot see its own crashes cannot fix them, and because what it sends has had the identifying parts taken out before it leaves.
Local storage
Your saved tool stack and your checklist progress are kept in your browser's local storage, not in a cookie and not on our servers. They never leave your device. Clearing your browsing data clears them.
Your browser's own controls
Every major browser can block or delete cookies from its settings, and blocking ours will not break the site. The switch at the top of this page is more precise: it stops the analytics without touching the two cookies that remember you asked.
