Business Model Canvas

Definition

Business Model Canvas: The Business Model Canvas is a one-page strategic tool that maps nine key business components: value proposition, customer segments, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structure. It provides a visual framework for designing, testing, and iterating business models.

Example Usage

We update our BMC quarterly. Last quarter, adding a channel partnership required updating four connected boxes—revealing dependencies we'd missed.

Common Misconceptions

Fill in once and done. The canvas is a living tool; update as your model evolves and learnings accumulate.
Every box needs detail. Start with hypotheses; validate through customer discovery before over-investing.
Canvas replaces business plan. It's a strategic thinking tool, not a comprehensive planning document.
