One-on-One

FoundationalOperations

Definition

One-on-One: A one-on-one is a regular private meeting between a manager and direct report focused on coaching, feedback, career development, and removing blockers. Unlike status updates, effective 1:1s are employee-driven conversations about what matters to them. Consistency matters—canceling 1:1s signals employees aren't a priority.

Example Usage

ā€œMy 1:1s follow a simple format: their topics first, my topics second, action items at the end. I never cancel unless absolutely necessary.ā€

Common Misconceptions

Use 1:1s for status updates. Status belongs in standups or async updates; 1:1s are for development and support.
Managers should drive the agenda. Employee-led 1:1s surface what actually matters to them.
Weekly 1:1s are too frequent. For most roles, weekly is ideal; bi-weekly minimum for experienced ICs.
