Product Requirement Document

ConceptualProductDocuments

Definition

Product Requirement Document: A Product Requirement Document (PRD) specifies what a product or feature should do to solve a customer problem. Modern PRDs focus on problem context, success metrics, and user outcomes rather than detailed specifications. They align teams on what to build and why, while leaving room for design and engineering creativity.

Example Usage

β€œOur PRD template has four sections: problem statement, success metrics, user stories, and open questions. Engineering loves the clarity.”

Common Misconceptions

PRDs must be comprehensive. Shorter PRDs focused on outcomes beat lengthy specification documents.
PRDs are waterfall artifacts. Agile teams use PRDs as living documents that evolve through development.
PM writes PRD alone then hands off. Collaborative PRD creation with design and engineering produces better products.
