User Story

FoundationalProductFrameworks

Definition

User Story: A user story is a short description of a feature from the perspective of the user, following the format: 'As a [user type], I want [goal] so that [benefit].' User stories shift focus from features to user outcomes, enabling discussions about the best way to achieve those outcomes rather than prescribing solutions.

Example Usage

β€œOur user story 'As a manager, I want to see team metrics in one view so that I can identify issues quickly' led to a dashboard redesign.”

Common Misconceptions

User stories are requirements. They're conversation starters about user needs, not detailed specifications.
Every feature needs a user story. Some technical work (refactoring, infrastructure) doesn't fit the format.
The format is rigid. Adapt the format to your team; the user-outcome focus matters more than exact wording.
