RICE Scoring

ConceptualFrameworksProduct

Definition

RICE Scoring: RICE is a prioritization framework scoring initiatives on Reach (how many users affected), Impact (effect per user), Confidence (certainty of estimates), and Effort (team resources required). The formula (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort produces comparable scores for prioritization.

Example Usage

RICE scoring revealed our highest-impact feature had low confidence. We ran a quick experiment first, saving months on a feature users didn't actually want.

Common Misconceptions

RICE replaces judgment. It's a framework for discussion, not an algorithm that makes decisions.
All projects should use RICE. Some decisions are strategic; not everything fits a scoring model.
Highest RICE always wins. Consider dependencies, strategic value, and team capability alongside scores.
