Cohort Analysis

ConceptualMetricsStrategies

Definition

Cohort Analysis: Cohort analysis groups users by a shared characteristic (typically signup date) and tracks their behavior over time. It reveals how different user groups perform and whether product changes improve metrics for newer cohorts compared to older ones.

Example Usage

β€œCohort analysis showed our January users had 50% better retention than December users after our onboarding improvements.”

Common Misconceptions

Overall metrics tell the full story. Cohort analysis reveals trends hidden in aggregate data.
Only time-based cohorts matter. Behavior-based cohorts (acquisition channel, plan type) are also valuable.
Cohort analysis is complex. Basic cohort views are built into most analytics tools.
