Radical Candor

Definition

Radical Candor: Radical Candor is a feedback framework that combines caring personally about people with challenging them directly. Created by Kim Scott, it contrasts with ruinous empathy (caring without challenging), obnoxious aggression (challenging without caring), and manipulative insincerity (neither). It enables honest, helpful feedback.

Example Usage

Instead of sugarcoating, I practiced Radical Candor: 'I care about your growth, which is why I need to tell you this presentation missed the mark. Here's how to fix it.'

Common Misconceptions

Radical Candor means being harsh. The 'caring personally' dimension is equally important as directness.
Only for negative feedback. Radical Candor applies to praise too—be specific about what worked and why.
Everyone can handle directness the same way. Adjust delivery to individuals while maintaining honesty.
