Definition

Situational Leadership: Situational Leadership theory posits that effective leaders adapt their style to followers' development level—from directing (high task, low relationship) to coaching, supporting, and delegating. No one leadership style fits all situations; leaders must diagnose and adapt to each team member and task.

Example Usage

New hire needed directing on unfamiliar tasks but supporting on her specialty area. Matching style to situation accelerated her ramp.

Common Misconceptions

Pick one leadership style. Effective leaders flex styles based on person, task, and situation.
More experienced people always need less direction. Experience in one area doesn't transfer to new challenges.
Delegation is always the goal. Some tasks always require coaching or supporting, regardless of experience.
