Story Mapping

ConceptualFrameworksProduct

Definition

Story Mapping: Story mapping is a visualization technique that arranges user stories in a two-dimensional grid—horizontal for user journey sequence, vertical for priority/detail. Created by Jeff Patton, it helps teams see the big picture while planning releases that deliver complete user experiences rather than random features.

Example Usage

Story mapping showed our MVP was missing a critical middle step. Users couldn't complete the journey—we added it before launch.

Common Misconceptions

Just another backlog view. Story maps reveal workflow gaps that flat backlogs hide.
Create once, then use backlog. Story maps should evolve with the product; keep them updated.
Every story needs full detail. High-level stories at the top, detail added as you move down.
