VP Engineering: The VP Engineering leads engineering execution—managing engineering teams, establishing processes, and ensuring technical deliverables meet business needs. Unlike CTOs who focus on technical vision, VPs Engineering focus on people, process, and delivery. Many companies have both; smaller ones often combine the roles.

Common Misconceptions

VP Engineering and CTO are the same. VPE focuses on people and delivery; CTO on technical vision and architecture.

Hire VPE after CTO. Some companies hire VPE first if technical leadership is strong but management is weak.
