Customer Interview

ConceptualProductStrategies

Definition

Customer Interview: Customer interviews are structured conversations with users or prospects to understand their experiences, problems, and needs. Effective interviews use open-ended questions, avoid leading language, and focus on past behaviors rather than hypothetical futures. They're foundational to product discovery and validation.

Example Usage

We interview 10 customers monthly. Their feedback shaped our roadmap—features we thought were priorities turned out to be low-value.

Common Misconceptions

Ask customers what they want. Ask about problems and behaviors instead; customers often can't articulate solutions.
Interviews validate your ideas. They should challenge your assumptions; seeking validation creates bias.
Remote interviews are inferior. Well-conducted remote interviews can be as effective as in-person ones.
