Remote-First

ConceptualOperationsStrategies

Definition

Remote-First: Remote-first is an operating model where remote work is the default, not an exception. Unlike remote-friendly (office-centric with remote option) or fully distributed (no office), remote-first companies may have offices but design all processes, communication, and culture for remote employees. This requires intentional documentation, async communication, and inclusive meeting practices.

Example Usage

Going remote-first meant restructuring everything: async-by-default communication, recorded decisions in Notion, and no hallway decisions.

Common Misconceptions

Remote-first means no office. You can have offices; remote-first means remote employees aren't second-class.
Just add Zoom and you're remote-first. True remote-first requires redesigning communication, documentation, and culture.
Remote-first is cheaper. While office costs drop, investment in tools, offsites, and culture-building increases.
